The Adams family has had a long history with Saab. It all started when Jerry Adams came home from his time in the service. While stationed in Germany he had heard of the Saab brand and when he came home, he found a job working at a Saab dealership (Borton Motors) in Minneapolis, MN.
At the same time Edmund Adams (Jerry's father) was running a small general automotive repair shop/feed store/Oliver tractor dealership in rural Meyer, Iowa. While Jerry was working he had told Edmund about these "little Swedish cars with 2 stroke engines" which caught Edmund's interest. In rural Iowa, the winters can get very long and very cold. With Saab's 2 stroke engines, this would fill a need for local farmers since many times in the extreme cold a 4 stroke engine would have trouble starting.
That is where the story began. Edmund signed all of the paper work to become a Saab dealership in April of 1964 and the "little Swedish cars" sold in numbers. In 1967, Jerry moved back home to Meyer to help Edmund run the dealership.
In the fall of 1978, Jerry took over the franchise and the Meyer Garage name continued to grow. During the late 70's, Marty (Jerry's son) had started working in the shop after school and during the summer. He also began his Saab training as well. Marty became one of the first SAAB Master Technicians in 1987. By the end of 1988, Meyer Garage became the first SAAB dealership in the nation to be staffed by all SAAB Master Technicians.
In the summer of 1996, Marty began management of the dealership and the Meyer Garage continued to grow and a second location was added in Iowa City from 2001 to 2014. The car crisis of 2009 hit the SAAB brand particularly hard. SAAB was sold by GM to Spyker in 2010 and ultimately was shuttered in 2012.
After the end of new car production by SAAB, Orio (originally SAAB Parts USA) took over support for the brand and Meyer Garage continues to be an Official SAAB Center for service.
